Agrupamento de Escolas Alexandre Herculano is a cluster of nine schools comprising different educational levels: primary schools (6) with kindergarten ; elementary schools(2) and the school seat (headquarters) that is a secondary school. It is located in the northeast part of the city of Porto, Portugal. The main building (secondary school) is over a hundred years old and keeps the name of a famous Portuguese writer of the 19th century. It was projected by a famous Portuguese architect, Marques da Silva.

Since 2011 the building was classified as a monument of public interest. The school is located in an urban and populated area of the city, which is very disadvantageous, both at a social and economical level. Our students come from that area and from the surrounding villages.
Most of the students are Portuguese; however, we also have students from Portugal ex-colonies andfrom Eastern countries, as well as from countries such as Marocco, India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Brazil. About 5% of the students are deaf or hard of hearing impaired. The ages of our students, (in the main building) range from 12-18 years old.

Our Institution (the main one) besides providing General Secondary Education Courses in Arts and Sciences, also offers Vocational courses in the areas of Informatics, Tourism and Childcare. In the evening there are some adult classes for the ones that hadn’t finished the regular studies. Our school is concerned about life projects and itineraries, in which the formation of conscious European Citizens is always on the spot. The engagement in former projects /partnerships proved to be an enrichment to our students, teachers and staff. By taking part in (this) Strategic Partnership our students and teachers will have a great opportunity to become aware of others and enjoy European life and society. All our students and teachers are acquainted with ICT and technological tools. They are used to participating in debates and forums and other types of discussions. They are used to working as individuals as well as in teams. They are open minded to new ideas and are eager to learning with the other and broadening their horizons and to gain the European Dimension. Through workshops, research, interviews, local/regional study visits they will develop both their personal and social skills. The English language, which all of them master, will give them the necessary tool to communicate and cooperate with partners through e-mails and other social nets.
